Brief Biography

Syed Ismail Ahson is Pro-Vice-Chancellor of Patna University since February 2008. Earlier, he was Professor of Computer Science in the Department of Computer Science at Jamia Millia Islamia (A Central University) New Delhi from October 2001 to January 2008.He has held a number of research and teaching positions in India and abroad. He is the founder Head of the Department of Computer Science at Jamia Millia University where he  started several new courses including MCA and MSc(Bioinformatics) and setup a number of teaching and research labs in the department .Earlier, during the period 1978 to 1991 he taught in the Department of Electrical Engineering as an Assistant Professor(1978-85) and full Professor(1986-1991) at the Indian Institute of Technology, New Delhi, where he was also Chairman of the Computer Technology Research Group , Coordinator of the Microprocessor Applications Program and Professor-in-Charge of the Curriculum Development Cell. Dr. Ahson was Professor and Head of Computer Engineering at King Saud University, Riyadh from 1992 to 2001 before returning back to India in 2001.From November 1966 to December 1976 he was Lecturer in the Department of Electrical Engineering of Bihar College of Engineering(now NIT) ,where he established laboratories and taught in the B.Sc.(Electrical Engineering) course.

 

Professor Ahson has an outstanding academic record right from secondary school. He stood 10th in the Bihar School Examination Board’s Matriculation result of 1959 (81000 students appeared for the matriculation examination in 1959) for which he received the Government of India Merit Scholarship for Post-Matriculation studies. He was a topper of Science College, Patna and later on he was a topper at the Bihar College of Engineering, Patna. During his studies at BCE he was also a student leader and contributed to various developmental activities of BCE, Patna. Professor Ahson completed his doctoral and post-doctoral research from the Universities of Sheffield and Liverpool, respectively, from 1973-78.He carried out post-doctoral research on real-time on-line computer control of Micromachine at the University of Liverpool. He also underwent advanced training on Hybrid Computing at the University of Sunderland in 1983 under a British Council Scheme. He is a Senior Member of IEEE and Member of Association of Computing Machineries (ACM).

 

His current research interests are: Machine Learning, Computational Biology and Bioinformatics,  Databases,  Data Mining and Knowledge Discovery, Information Security, Identity and Access Management ,  Semantic Web, and Image Processing.  Dr Ahson has supervised 22 Ph.D. , 45 M.S. and one M.Phil.  theses to completion. Dr Ahson has authored over 120 publications including 7 books, 45 journal papers, 75 conference papers and 8 book chapters. He has delivered keynote addresses and invited talks and chaired technical sessions in conferences in Paris, Athens, Malaysia, Japan , Saudi Arabia , USA and India. He has moved freely across disciplines, lecturing in departments of electrical and computer engineering , computer science, biotechnology, and bioinformatics.

 

Dr Ahson was Chief Investigator of "Development of a Security Assessment Framework for Object Oriented Software", a Department of Information Technology, Government of India funded project. He is the Chairperson of a task force on “Identity and Access Management” under the Nationale-Governance Programme (NeGP) of Ministry of Communication and Information Technology, Government of India.

 

Professor Ahson was Coordinator of Jamia BIF(Bioinformatics Infrastructure Facility) supported by the Department of Biotechnology, Government of India and Consultant to Jamia Millia Islamia for M.Sc.(Bioinformatics) course. He has created a Software Suite GEDAS for analysis and clustering of Microarray Data with his student Prof. T.V. Prasad, which is freely available from their web site. He is a member of Academic Councils and of Boards of Studies of numerous Indian universities and Government of India organizations. Dr Ahson was earlier  associated with American India Foundation’s Digital Equalizer Program aimed at promoting computers in primary and middle schools.

 

At Patna University  Prof Ahson is Chairman of IT Core Group. He has initiated the process of establishing a Campus-Wide Network to provide Internet access to around 1000 Faculty Members, Administrative Staff, the Library, UGC Academic Staff College and ten constituent colleges and 31 PG Departments of Studies including Social Science, Commerce, Humanities, Science, Law and Education. He is also getting the Examination System of Patna University automated for which an MoU has been signed with NIC which will implement Chanakya software for examination system. He has also taken initiative for digitization of manuscripts and implementation of access to 22 digital libraries through VSAT. Financial accounting, Web-based Employees Management System, and  Stores/Purchase, and Web site management are other initiatives. He is very keen for infrastructure development at Patna University to provide quality education to around 20,000 students of Patna University. He also teaches Bioinformatics in combined class of around 50 students from M.Sc.Courses in Biotechnology, Biodiversity and  Microbiology. He also teaches System Analysis & Design and Programming Language C in the Department of Statistics of Patna University.
