Post Graduate Departments of Patna University

Department of Geography

The  Department  of  Geography  was  first established in 1928 in the science block of the college as a new academic programme of Patna College.  The  Post-Graduate  teaching  was started, however, in the year of 1949 and since then  Post-Graduate  Department  and  the Geography Department of Patna College are functioning  as  an  integrated  department having a common class routine and common academic pursuits. Together with class-rooms, lecture-theatre and faculty  offices,  the  department  has  infrastructural assets like seminar library, museum, map-processing  laboratory  and  computer laboratory. The imposing structure of a globe in the front garden to the southeast of the building, the map of India in the front garden and map of undivided Bihar to the rear of the building present a panoramic view around the building of the Department. It is one of the leading  centers  of  teaching,  research  and training  in  geography  in  India.  The Department celebrated its Diamond Jubilee function on March 13, 2011 after completion of 60 years of P.G. teaching in Geography. The University  Grants  Commission  has  also granted SAP (Special Assistance Programme) DRS I to the department on the basis  of its outstanding performance  in  the  field  of teaching  and  research.  IMD (Indian Meteorological Department) has also decided to establish a weather Recording Station in the Department by the end of this year. Teachers, research  scholars  and  students  of  this department  will  use  this  Meteorological observatory for weather data collection.
The Department has, now, well equipped the rooms of all teachers with desktop, printers and other essential accessories so that the teaching and research could be improved. There are also 4 Rajiv Gandhi Research Fellows and 7 Junior Researcher Fellows under the financial support of UGC and CSIR.

Other Courses
The Department has introduced One-Year P.G. Diploma  Course  in  Remote  Sensing  and Geographical Information Systems.

Infrastructure and facilities
The Seminar Library of the Department has more than 15000 books and journals, including publications of the Census of India, beside a rich equipment storehouse and a laboratory.
The  computer  laboratory  has  several computers. With the help of the 10th Plan U.G.C. Grant of Rs. 3.5 lakhs, the library and the laboratory have been modernized with the purchases  of  books,  CDs,  Laptop,  GPS instrument, GIS software etc. A library of about 500 titles has also been separately developed under SAP DRS-1
