Brief Profile :

The post graduate Department of Persian, Patna University is one of the oldest department of Patna University. It was established in the year 1917 A.D. for Imparting teaching of Post graduate level only. But in the year 1948 A.D. it was authorized to supervise and guide research scholars for the award of Ph.D. and D. Litt. degree in Persian language and literature also.

Prior to 1952 A.D. the department was a part of Patna College. However, as a result of promulgation of the Patna University Act in the year 1952 A.D. the Post graduate department of Persian was separated from Patna College and allotted a separate building. This building is situated on the bank of Ganga and located at Darbhanga House (Rani Block) of Patna University.

The department has been served by a number of scholars of International repute and also has produced many literary personalities. This department has been a symbol and center of Indo-Iran Unity and Socio-cultured understanding.

Seminar/Conferences :

The department of Persian organised a 15 days spoken Persian workshop with the collaboration of Iran Culture House-New Delhi from 29th November 2005 to 13th December 2005 in the depatment of Persian. The inauguration was held in the auditorium of Geology Deptt., P.U. and was presided over by Prof. S. Ehteshamuddin, Vice Chancellor of Patna University. Key address was Delivered by Prof. S. Nazre-Ahsan, Ex. V.C. Patna University. The Cultural Councellor of Iran New Delhi Dr. Murtaza Shafei Shakeeb inaugurated the seminar and Dr. M.M. Farrukhzad of Iran Culture House, New Delhi was the Chief guest.

Prof. A.W. Azhar, Ex-Chairman, Deptt. of Persian J.N.U. Delhi, Dr. Md. Ali Ghifari of Iran and Dr. M.M. Farruikhazad of Iran culture House, New Delhi has taken classes with the audio-visual aids. Iran Culture House also donated a L.G.T.V. set to the deptt. Apart from Patna University teachers and students, 34 teachers and 16 Research scholars of the different universities of Bihar, W. Bengal, Jharkhand and Assam participated in these 15 dyas ``Spoken Persian Classes.’’

The velidectory session was held in the evening of 13th December 05. The function was presided over by Dr. Imteyaz Ahmad, Director, Khuda Baksh Library, Patna and  Dr. Monazir Hasan, Hon’ble Minister of Building Constructions and Housing, Govt. of Bihar addressed the deligates as Chief Guest.

Publications :

(a) Prof. Md. Ghaffar Siddiqui Publihsed one article during this session.

(b) Dr. Md. Abid Hussain published two articles during the session.

Study Tour :

(a)         Prof. Md. Ghaffar Siddiqui attended three days All India Persian Teahcers Conference held in Hyderabad and read a paper entitled. ``Life and style of the poetry of Faizy.’’

(b)         Prof. Md. Ghaffar Siddiqui delivered four lecturers as resources person in the workshop of ``National Mission for Manuscript’’ held from 25th February 2006 to 6th March 2006 on the topic ``Manuscriptalogy and paleography.’’

Visits :

Prof. Shamshad Hussain, Vice-chancellor, Magadh University, Bodh Gaya on our invitation visited the department and give a talk on the topic ``Our Society and our reponsibilities.’’

Research Programme/Project :

(a)         Dr. (Mrs.) Halima Nikhat is working on ``Indian Life and Environment in Persian Poetry’’ under a U.G.C. sponsored scheme.

(b)         Six scholars are working for the award of Ph.D. degree in the department.
