NATIONAL CHARACTER
The Patna University has played vital role in India’s struggle for independence against colonial domination and also in the task of national reconstruction during post-independence period. This was the centre of nationalist and revolutionary activities. One needs to recount the services rendered by Mazharul Haque, Rajendra Prasad, Sri Krisna Sinha, Dr. Sachidanand Sinha, Anugral Narain Sinha, Jay Prakash Narayan, B. P. Mandal, Karpoori Thakur, L. N. Mishra, Baliram Bhagat, Ram Dulari Sinha, Sidheshwar Prasad and many others, all alumni of this University. The Quit India Movement of 1947 had its loudest echoes in the portels of this institution. The Total Revolution of Jai Prakash Narayan in 1974 had its support base in this University.
It is needless to add that Patna University has been in the vanguard of social and political changes even beyond the linguistic, cultural and sectarian barriers. A glance at the list of the Vice-Chancellors (Appendix-1) bears the testimony to this fact. The well qualified teachers and outstanding personalities of this university who have added to its rich academic heritage have been drawn from every nook and corner of this country. Sri Jadunath Sarkar, Gorakh Nath Singh, Balbhadra Prasad, K. K. Dutta, H. S. Askari, R. S. Sharma, Bimla Prasad, V. P. Verma, K. N. Prasad, S. C. Chatterjee, P. Dayal, J. N. Chatterjee, S. M. Mohshin, D. P. Sen Mazumdar, D. M. Datta, Ramavatar Sharma, Gyanchand, V. K. N. Menon, K. P. Jaiswal, K. S. Caldwell, Dr. N. S. Nagendra Nath, R. P. Roy, Kamta Prasad, R. Shukla, D. N. Lal, Dukhan Ram etc. have served this university and are known for their published work of outstanding merit both in India and abroad. Likewise, students from Orissa, Kashmir, northeast states of India and other states as well as from Nepal, Thailand, Sri Lanka, and Africa have been regularly coming here to get education.
The Patna Women’s College, a constituent unit of Patna University, is still under the supervision of Christian Missionaries. This is the premier centre for educating girls in all walks of life. Magadh Mahila College & Women’s Training College are the two other institutes, exclusively for girls.
These are bare facts that manifest the national character of this University.
