Introduction : The Department of Urdu, in the Faculty of Humanities (P.U.) is one of the oldest Departments of Urdu in the country. The first M.A. Urdu examination of the Department was held in 1930 with non-Collegiate students. Dr. Azimuddin Ahmad an eminent scholar of Arabic, Persian and Urdu as well as a renowned Urdu poet was the founder Head of this Department in 1936. Primarily this Department was housed in Patna College since July 1936 but in 1952 it was shifted to the present Rani Block of Darbhanga House, situated a the bank of river Ganges.

M.A. Urdu course is based upon 16 (sixteen) papers. There are eight papers each in M.A. previous and M.A. Final. They are as follows :

As far as the thrust area of Research is concerned, relationship of Urdu with local dialects as well as with other languages and literatures must be brought to light. Current problems of man and life pictures in Urdu literature should also be studied. For this suitable environment and space are needed.
