Introduction :

The department was established in July, 1946 and since then it has been imparting both Graduate (B.Sc. Pass and Hons.) and Post-graduate teaching besides being actively engaged in research in different discipline with U.G.C., C.S.I.R., D.S.T./P.U. financial assistance.

Thrust Area :

According to U.G.C. guidelines, the main thrust is towards consolidation and expansion to ensure qulity and efficiency in teaching and research.

At present there are about ten research scholars working in the deptt. and on average three (3) Ph.D.’s are produced per annum. In addition all faculty members are involved in educational and other co-curricular activittites.

Teaching and Research Facilities Available in the Depatrment :

(v)      The department has a separate Geological Museum building having a good collection of geological samples on the ground floor. On its 1st  floor there is a good Air Conditioned Auditorium of sitting capacity of 160 (one hundred and sixty) persons.

(vi)     The front lawn of the department is being developed as a geological field museum. In addition, the workshop for preparation of thin section, polished section for ores rock crushing facilities for sample preparation for chemical analysis are available.

(vii)    Major equipment available in the department :

          (a)      Atomic Absorption Spectrophotometers

          (b)      U.V. Spectrophotometers

          (c)      Optical Spectograph

          (d)      X-ray Diffractometer

          Some of them are not in working condition and require repair and spare parts.

(viii)    The department has the teaching aids like models, charts, slide projectors, overhead projectors, audiovisual equipments, public address system, etc.

(ix)     Library

          The department library has about 5000 books and has been subscribing ten foreign and nine Indian Journals (App. II) and has a reading room.

          (a)      The annual recuring estimate for expenditure provided to the department by the university :

(x)      Plans for future Development in teaching and research :

          The department has been one of the pioneers in field of mineralogical, petrological and geochemcial research in the country.

          The department aims to enter into new areas of research, using the Romote sensing methods.

(xi)     Future Plans : The department has plans for qualitative improvement in postgraduate education by providing better library, museum and laboratory facilities and more intensive field training  programmes. The students at the postgraduate level woudl be encouraged to take small independent projects report and desertation shall form the essential part of postgraduate education in the coming years.

          The M.Sc. syllabus has been thorougly revised and update keeping in view the syllabus of the U.P.S.C.,      Civil Services and Geologists examinations as well as that of the NET of the C.S.I.R.

          The department also aims to provide wider, more modern and relevant base to its postgraduate students by recruiting faculty and staff having specilization in structural geology, geohydrology, marine geology, mathematical geology, engineering geology, remote sensing and environmental geology, mathematical geology, engineering geology, remote sensing and environmental geology.
